what to do after death
At Barnaby Jones Funeral Services, we understand that losing a loved one can be one of life's most difficult experiences. During this challenging time, there are several practical steps that need to be taken. We are here to provide guidance, support, and compassionate care every step of the way.
If the Death Occurs at Home
If the death was expected, contact the person's GP, district nurse, or healthcare professional. They will arrange for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to be completed.
If the death was unexpected, call 999 immediately. The emergency services will advise you on the next steps and may refer the matter to the Coroner.
Once the death has been confirmed, you can contact Barnaby Jones Funeral Services, and we will arrange for your loved one to be brought into our care with dignity and respect.
If the Death Occurs in Hospital
The hospital bereavement team will guide you through the process and advise when the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death is available. You can contact us at any stage, and we will liaise with the hospital on your behalf where required.
If the Death Occurs in a Care Home or Nursing Home
The care home staff will contact the appropriate medical professional and assist with the necessary procedures. Once the relevant documentation has been completed, you may contact us to make arrangements for your loved one to be brought into our care.
Registering the Death
In England, a death should normally be registered within five days, unless the Coroner is involved.
The death can usually be registered by:
-A relative of the deceased.
-Someone present at the death.
-The person arranging the funeral (in certain circumstances).
The Registrar will advise what documentation is required and will provide the necessary paperwork to allow funeral arrangements to proceed.
